WHAT TYPES OF DISORDERS DO PODIATRISTS TREAT?

The following information outlines a few common disorders that podiatrists treat. Keep reading to find out more about these disorders!

ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is a very common condition that can impact the feet. If the feet joints are swollen, tender or even red in color, then it is recommended to visit a podiatry office to have an evaluation. Arthritis can become very painful and problematic if it goes untreated. With the help of a podiatrist, physical therapy and medication may be administered to get the condition under control.

INGROWN TOENAILS

When the nails in the toes begin to grow abnormally, there is a risk of infection and pain. Any sign of ingrown toenails should be taken to a podiatrist. They may have to be extracted so that they do not cause severe problems later on. A podiatry office can examine and extract any ingrown toenails that are posing a risk to the patient.

HEEL PAIN

Heel pain is another common problem that affects a lot of people. Any pain or discomfort should be addressed by a podiatrist. In the long term, untreated heel pain can result in the inability to stand or walk. The podiatry office may administer physical therapy or medication to treat the pain.

SPRAINED ANKLE

Sprained ankles are usually a relatively minor condition, but in some instances, they can cause more major problems. It is always better to have a sprained ankle evaluated by a podiatrist to ensure that it is nothing serious. They may wrap the ankle and prescribe a lot of rest and ice, but outside of simple at-home remedies, sprained ankles usually have to heal on their own.

CORNS OR CALLUSES

Corns or calluses on the feet can be very uncomfortable, especially when walking or standing. These should be evaluated by a podiatrist to determine the best course of treatment. Sometimes surgery is necessary, and in the case of severe calluses or corns, a podiatrist may recommend a lancing procedure to remove them. In minor instances, they can be treated with pain medication.
