Signs You Need Geriatric Foot Care

We help patients of various ages gain full functionality of their feet by offering geriatric foot care. The body changes with age and that includes changes to the feet. Simple actions such as being able to go for a nice casual stroll or even walk up the stairs can suddenly become challenging in the later years of life. The body’s condition can limit the types of footwear one puts on each day and what activities one can participate in. We understand how discouraging this can be and have ways to help the transition, while also ensuring that one’s feet are as healthy as possible. We can decrease the impact the feet’s condition has on one’s lifestyle.

SIGNS YOU NEED GERIATRIC FOOT CARE

Geriatric foot care can apply to a variety of conditions in seniors. Some of the ones we treat are ingrown toenails, arthritis, diabetic ulcers, fungal nails, corns, and more. By visiting our clinic at the first sign of foot problems, it will allow us to diagnose and treat the patient before the condition worsens. This is absolutely in your best interest, possibly saving one’s feet or ability to walk around.

One of the reasons the elderly tend to have problems with their feet is that they have decreased circulation to lower parts of the body. As a result, blood may not be flowing correctly to the feet or legs. One sign of an issue with weak blood flow is if the feet are asleep all the time. Also, if one seems to constantly lose feeling in the feet, ankles, or calves, then it is important to visit our office; even if the issue is only temporary. A lack of feeling in one’s legs does not mean they are paralyzed but simply that he or she cannot feel as much as you used to.

SPOTTING THE SIGNS EARLY ON

If there are any problems with the skin on the feet, it is also a sign that a patient needs to visit us. Problems can include rashes, lacerations, swelling, constant redness and sensitivity. Keep in mind that any visible symptom is an example of what is happening within the body, so it is important to visit a doctor right away.

We recommend that patients look at their feet every day and pay attention to see if there any noticeable changes. If there are, call our office. Otherwise, one can get by with visiting us for an examination once or twice a year. For diabetic patients, it is recommended to visit us twice a year at minimum. Patients also need to be diligent about keeping their feet clean and dry, using powder as necessary. Keeping the toenails neat and trimmed is also important for decreasing the risk of developing a fungal infection.

When it comes to comfort, we may recommend that you do things like wear sole inserts to provide additional support and make walking around easier. We can also suggest certain shoes that are going to provide you with the support you need for overall health.
