COMMON CAUSES OF FOOT PAIN
Foot pain can be caused by something incredibly simple like wearing the wrong type of shoes or by something more serious like diabetes. Since it is difficult to know why your symptoms are occurring it is best for you to come in for an examination.
Some common causes of foot pain include:
- Arthritis. If you have arthritis in your feet, the pain may start out as mild but if left untreated, it can become difficult to walk. It is best to address this quickly and proactively.
- Achilles tendinitis. If you overuse your Achilles tendon, you can experience pain in your heel. This is a challenge for many athletes but there are things you can do to prevent this problem including wearing supports in your shoes and stretching.
- Bone spurs. A bony projection, bone spurs can cause significant pain and irritation when you walk, especially when wearing shoes with little support or shoes that are too tight. These need to be treated in our office and may require surgery.
- Bunions. If you have a history of wearing shoes that are too tight or being on your feet all day, you could develop bunions. We can conduct a bunion surgery to remove them.
- Broken foot or ankle. Even small hairline fractures can cause pain when pressure is applied. If you are unsure of why your feet suddenly hurt so bad you may have a fractured that has gone undiagnosed.
- Calluses and corns. While rather mild when compared to other health conditions, calluses can still cause discomfort. We can help you to treat them.
- Diabetes and diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes must be managed because if not, it can lead to foot loss. If you are a diabetic it is wise to visit our office for an annual exam so that we can keep an eye on the health of your feet and begin treatment at the first sign of a problem. If you are diabetic and having foot pain, this appointment should be your top priority.
- Gout. Your feet may become red, tender, swollen and painful if you have gout. This is a type of arthritis that can impact both men and women.
- Hammertoe. You can experience hammertoe after a toe has become traumatized or injured. It makes it impossible for the toe to remain straight which can lead to pain and discomfort.
- Plantar fasciitis. If the plantar fascia (thick band of tissue) becomes inflamed, you can experience a great deal of pain on the bottom of your foot since this runs from your heels to your toes.
- Ingrown toenails. Children are particularly susceptible to getting ingrown toenails, typically from wearing shoes that are too tight or cutting toenails incorrectly. Ingrown toenails can become infected so you should visit us for treatment.
Foot pain is not something that you should ignore. Instead, visit our clinic for a diagnosis and treatment.
