Arthritic Foot and Ankle Care: Who Needs It
If you are suffering from any of the common symptoms associated with arthritis in the foot, you need to schedule an appointment for an examination. Here are a few of the symptoms you should watch for:
- Swollen feet. Arthritis can lead to swelling and inflammation, so if you notice that you are constantly dealing with swollen feet, it could be due to uncontrolled blood sugar. Just keep in mind that a low level of swelling is natural, based on eating too much salt, it being very hot outside, being pregnant, etc. However, if none of these factors exist or your feet remain swollen afterward, you could have an arthritic foot problem.
- Numb feet. If your feet or ankles become numb, you could be dealing with another side effect.
- Severe foot pain. If your feet hurt when you walk, put pressure on them, or even relax, it could be due to your arthritis and you would be in need of treatment.
Arthritic Foot and Ankle Care: What It Entails
When you schedule an appointment for foot care, we will begin with a thorough examination. We will need to determine the severity of your arthritis and if anything else is contributing to your foot pain or discomfort. It may also be necessary to take x-rays in order to complete the diagnosis. Each treatment plan is created to address the individual needs of our patients, so this first appointment is critical for determining the next steps.
Some patients require an oral medication to help manage symptoms of arthritis. From our perspective, as a foot doctor, we tend to treat the condition by prescribing solutions that address the feet and ankles directly. For example, you may benefit from:
- Orthotics.
- Wearing a brace.
- Using arch supports.
- Doing specific stretching exercises on a daily basis.
- Wearing shoes that provide the right support, without putting pressure on bunions or bone spurs.
- Using a topic medication.
- Undergoing surgery to remove a bunion or address other specific problems.
Typically, we recommend that patients begin with the least invasive solutions, like wearing arch supports and prescribed orthotics. However, if those do not produce the results necessary to be able to walk comfortably, you may need to seriously consider surgery. We can go over the pros and cons of each option when speaking with you about your specific treatment plan.
